Description

The Hong Kong Baptist University, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Baptist University, located in Kowloon,  consists of two buildings functioning as teaching,  administration, library, conference rooms, etc. Special design elements are provided on the student street such as "convenience stations" and at the main entrance which  express the traditional Chinese school hall in a modern  language.  The focal point of the design is an octagonal shaped  structure with a skylight topped by a clock tower over the main entrance of the administration building,  conspicuously located at the corner of Junction Road and Renfrew Road where the Council Chamber and  Presidential Office are situated. The east and west wings on both sides of the entrance symbolise an open-arm which welcomes the public and users. The material for the podium paving is the same as at the Waterloo Road Campus in order to create a visual link in a subtle manner. The inspiration for the design of the façade came from  traditional Chinese screens and learning institutions; the  intention was to interpret traditional Chinese architecture in a contemporary way and adopt a formal and dignified appearance in the treatment of the façade. External walls are finished in yellow tiles and the windows, with their green frames and tinted glazing, stand out against the  facades.
